It was a good couple of weeks for movies. At least, I chose some good ones to see. Two comedies, one doc, and OF COURSE I saw “Man of Steel.” Here’s what I thought:
Man of Steel
Loved it. I saw this in regular D, since I usually forget I’m even watching 3D after about 30-minutes, but I think this would have been a good one to splurge for the extra 2Ds. The effects were terrific, especially during fight scenes. I really liked the story, and even though the movie is almost two and a half hours long, it never dragged. I thought Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, and Diane Lane were really good. I thought Amy Adams was miscast as Lois Lane. Lois Lane is a brunette, for God’s sake. I love Amy Adams, but she was a little too cutesy for the role. Emily Blunt, Emma Stone, even Jessica Chastain with dark hair would have worked better for me. Most importantly (buried my lead on purpose), Superman, Henry Cavill, is hot. He’s amazingly good-looking. He’s beautiful. Redoing the classic Christopher Reeve role had to be a little intimidating, but I think he did a terrific job. Go for the 3D or IMAX, if you can.
The Internship
I like almost anything Vince Vaughn is in, and this was no exception. I don’t usually like Owen Wilson, but he and Vince Vaughn have really good chemistry. After seeing trailers for this movie a half-dozen times, I was afraid they included all the funny scenes, but that wasn’t the case. And even after having seen repeated clips of the scene where Owen Wilson lists all the “Terminator” films to prove that people don’t like machines (“One, two, three, four…”) and Vince Vaughn pipes up “All of them,” I still laughed at it during the film. Did they really film at Google headquarters? Is it really like that there? It kind of made me like Google more. I say, spend the money on this one.
The Five Year Engagement
A two-hour comedy? It sounded to me like it could have been a case of a too-kind editing team. And it kind of was. But Jason Segal was terrific as always. I also like Emily Blunt, no surprise after my “Man of Steel” comment. This was a fun Redbox rental. $1.25 that was well-spent, even if I got more movie for my money than I needed. (Edit with more meanness next time!)
Chimpanzee
This is a Disneynature film. Holy cow, that was Tim Allen narrating? I can’t believe it. I couldn’t stand listening to him and ejected the movie about 20 minutes in. I really wanted to like this movie, since Disney donated some money to the Jane Goodall Institute through proceeds. Maybe I should have just hit “mute” and let it play. 🙁
I’m about to fly to Barcelona (expect a travel blog within hours!), so I’ll have more movies and even more European adventures for you shortly!
